Locales was engaged by Hastings District Council to create a series of short, accessible videos explaining how the dams and stream monitoring systems work.

In the wake of Cyclone Gabrielle and the significant impact it had on the Havelock North community, Hastings District Council identified a growing need to clearly explain how its streams and dam systems operate, and the role they play in mitigating the impacts of flooding.
Designed for a broad audience, the videos we created provide reassurance that the systems performed as intended during the cyclone and highlight how the community and council can work together to keep everyone safe.
Using pointcloud data, we created 3D models of the Mangarau dam and the wider Havelock North.

The model of the Mangarau dam also shows what rising water levels look like and how the dam manages the flow of water during a storm.
Complicated topics were further explained with animated infographics – including animations of the dams during different rates of flow.

The result is a series of versatile assets that the Hastings District Council can use to explain how they manage stormwater assets and garner public awareness.
