Te Ara Nā Te Kōtuku

Explore the fascinating Taumarunui of times past through the storytelling trail Te Ara Nā Te Kōtuku. Developed in partnership with Ngāti Hāua and the Ruapehu District Council, Te Ara Nā Te Kōtuku is a self-guided mobile trail through significant mana whenua sites in Taumarunui.

The tour is composed of seven significant locations around Taumarunui, guiding visitors along the riverbanks while they listen to stories and insights from the indigenous Ngāti Hāua people.

The project utilises our full Storymapp® system, featuring the Storymapp®, mobile guide, and Storymapp® Box.

The Storymapp® features a bespoke illustration of Taumarunui, as it would have looked when the tūpuna (ancestors) lived there. Modern streets have been overlaid for wayfinding purposes.

QR codes take visitors to the mobile guide, where they can listen to the audio narrations or explore the 360˚ recreations.

The mobile guide is also enhanced with edited oral history interviews with Ngāti Hāua, preserving and sharing treasured kōrero passed down through generations.

At each site, immersive 360˚ historical recreations show what the area looked like before Taumarunui became a Native Settlement.

The Storymapp® Box is located at the Taumarunui isite. It provides an overview of the tour and encourages visitors to purchase a Storymapp®. It also features an option to switch to the Ruapehu District Storymapp® Box, which presents tourism offerings in the region.
