Te Papa Voyaging Interactive: Manu Rere Moana

A digital interactive designed for Te Papa’s Manu Rere Moana permanent exhibition.

Locales designed the user interface for the Voyaging Interactive in the Manu Rere Moana exhibition refresh. The exhibition celebrates the mātauranga of celestial navigation, whilst exploring the revitalisation of this knowledge in the 1980s and 1990s, which culminated in the voyage of Te Aurere.

We worked closely with the voyaging community and Te Papa staff to craft a beautiful, 3D game-like interactive about the waka hourua, Te Aurere, and her creator and crew.

The interactive shares the stories of Te Aurere and her voyages, which helped re-establish traditional Polynesian voyaging in Aotearoa.

The interactive lets visitors step through several of Te Aurere’s voyages across the Pacific, starting in 1992, and tells the story of her creator, Tā Hekenukumai Ngāiwi Busby.

It also details other waka hourua of Aotearoa, which to this day keep the tradition of celestial voyaging alive.
